Hartalika Teej 2026: Date, Vrat Rules and What to Wear

Hartalika Teej 2026 falls on Monday, 14 September 2026, and this year it lands on the very same morning as Ganesh Chaturthi, which is why so many households are unsure which puja comes first. The vrat is one of the strictest observances in the Hindu calendar: married women, and many unmarried girls, keep it nirjala, without food or even water, in devotion to Shiva and Parvati. This guide gives you the tithi timings, the order of the day, the fast rules, and what to wear.

Soultheory is a spiritual jewellery brand, so the last part is where we can genuinely help. A Teej bracelet is not a ritual requirement, but if you are going to wear one through a waterless fast and two pujas, it is worth choosing and caring for it properly.

When is Hartalika Teej 2026?

Hartalika Teej 2026 is on Monday, 14 September 2026. It is observed on Tritiya, the third day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada, which is the lunar month that also carries Ganesh Chaturthi and Anant Chaturdashi.

A lot of pages online will tell you 13 September. They are not being careless; the tithi genuinely straddles both days, and the sunrise rule is what settles it.

The tithi timings that decide the date

Panchang timings for Chennai, where sunrise on both days is 05:58 AM:

Date Tithi position Sunrise Verdict
Sunday 13 September Dwitiya until 07:08 AM, Tritiya begins 07:08 AM 05:58 AM Tritiya absent at sunrise
Monday 14 September Tritiya until 07:06 AM, then Chaturthi 05:58 AM Tritiya present at sunrise
Hartalika is a Pratahkal vrat, meaning the puja belongs to the early morning rather than the evening. Because Tritiya is running at sunrise on 14 September and not at sunrise on 13 September, 14 September is the day that carries the observance. Sunrise anywhere in India on that date falls comfortably before 07:06 AM, so the answer holds whether you are in Kolkata or Rajkot.

Why some families still keep it on 13 September

Households in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and neighbouring regions follow a different convention and begin the vrat when the tithi begins rather than when it is present at sunrise. If your family has kept Hartalika on the earlier day for generations, keep doing that. A vrat is a family custom carried down a line, and a panchang table is not an instruction to break it.

Why Hartalika Teej and Ganesh Chaturthi share 14 September

Tritiya and Chaturthi are consecutive tithis, so Hartalika always sits the day before Ganesh Chaturthi. In 2026 the two compress into one calendar date because Tritiya ends at 07:06 AM and Chaturthi takes over for the rest of the day. The mythology fits the sequence neatly: Parvati is worshipped in the morning, and her son is installed at home a few hours later.

Karnataka has always treated this as a pair. Gowri Habba, the Swarna Gauri vrata, is observed the day before Ganesha arrives, and in 2026 it is listed on the same 14 September.

How to order the two pujas in one morning

The two rituals do not compete, because they sit in different muhurat windows:

  • Hartalika puja is Pratahkal. In Chennai that window runs from sunrise at 05:58 AM to 07:06 AM, a little over an hour. Check your own city's sunrise, since the closing time is fixed but sunrise is not.
  • Ganesh Sthapana is a Madhyahna ritual, traditionally performed in the late morning to early afternoon.
  • So the natural order is Parvati puja at first light, then the murti brought in and installed at midday.
  • If your household only does one of the two, nothing is lost. Both are complete observances on their own.
Our Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 guide covers the ten-day Ganeshotsav that starts the same afternoon, including what to do with jewellery on Visarjan day.

What Hartalika Teej celebrates

The name is a compound of harat, taken away, and alika, a female friend. In the Puranic account, Parvati had resolved to win Shiva through penance, and her father had other plans for her marriage. Her friends carried her off to a forest cave, where she fashioned a Shiva lingam out of sand and kept a waterless fast until he accepted her. Hartalika is that abduction by a friend, remembered every year.

That is why the observance is so tightly bound to Shiva and Parvati as a pair, and why married women keep it for the wellbeing of their husbands while unmarried girls keep it in hope of a good one. According to traditional belief, the sand lingam made by hand on the morning of the vrat matters more than any expensive offering, because Parvati herself made hers from what the forest gave her.

The regional names for the same day

  • Hartalika Teej across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra.
  • Gowri Habba or Swarna Gauri Vrata in Karnataka, where Gauri is welcomed home the day before her son.
  • Haritalika in parts of Nepal, where the fast is kept with particular strictness.
This is a different festival from Hariyali Teej, which falls in Sawan during the monsoon and is the green one. If you are looking for that day, our Hariyali Teej crystal guide covers it, and the Hindu festival calendar 2026 sets out the year in order.

Hartalika Teej vrat rules

The vrat is nirjala, which is the strictest category of Hindu fast: no food, and traditionally no water, from the morning of the vrat until the paran the next morning. It is closer in demand to Nirjala Ekadashi than to the Monday fasts of Sawan.

The shape of the day

  1. Bathe before sunrise and complete the shringar before the puja rather than after it.
  2. Make the Shiva lingam, Parvati and Ganesha from clean sand or river clay by hand.
  3. Offer bel patra to Shiva and flowers, haldi and kumkum to Parvati, then read or hear the Hartalika katha.
  4. Keep the night jagran if your family does, since the vrat is traditionally kept awake as well as unfed.
  5. Break the fast the next morning after the concluding puja, starting with water and something light.
A plain note, because it matters more than any ritual detail: a waterless fast in September heat is demanding. If you are pregnant, nursing, diabetic, on daily medication or recovering from illness, speak to your doctor and keep a phalahar or water-permitted version instead. Every tradition allows a modified vrat, and the older texts assume it.

For a sense of how much lighter the other Shiva fasts are, our guide to Sawan Somwar vrat rules is a useful comparison.

What to wear on Hartalika Teej 2026

Green is the Teej colour and the solah shringar, the sixteen adornments, is the traditional framework for dressing on the day. Here is where each piece sits and what it means if you are wearing a bracelet alongside.

Shringar element Traditional association Note for a bracelet wearer
Green saree or lehenga Growth, the living world, Parvati as Gauri Green stones echo it without competing
Green glass bangles Marital wellbeing, worn in numbers A single bracelet sits best on the other wrist
Mehendi Applied the previous evening, dried before the fast Let it set fully before putting a bracelet back on
Sindoor and bindi Worn by married women through the vrat No conflict with any bead
Mangalsutra The marriage thread, never removed Keep it on; see our pairing guide
A rudraksha or crystal bracelet Optional, personal, not prescribed Wear it for the whole vrat or not at all
Two points worth making plainly. A bracelet is not part of the solah shringar and no text requires one, so nobody should feel they are keeping an incomplete vrat without it. And if you already wear a mangalsutra or a kalava on the wrist, those come first and a bracelet simply fits around them.

Recommended Soultheory bracelets for Hartalika Teej

Because the vrat is addressed to Shiva and Parvati together, the pieces that suit it are the ones that carry both.

Gauri Shankar rudraksha bracelet

The Gauri Shankar bracelet at Rs 3,999 is the most literally appropriate piece we make for this day. A Gauri Shankar bead is two rudraksha naturally fused along their length, and per Vedic tradition it is read as Gauri and Shankar joined, which is exactly what Hartalika commemorates. These beads are genuinely uncommon and widely imitated by gluing two ordinary beads together, so if you are buying one anywhere, read our six checks for a real Gauri Shankar first.

Rudraksha and moonstone Shiv Shakti set

The Balance and Protection Shiv Shakti couple set at Rs 1,999 pairs rudraksha with moonstone, the masculine and feminine halves of the same idea. It is a two-bracelet set, which makes it a natural Teej gift between a husband and wife rather than something one person wears. The meaning behind a Shiva Shakti bracelet explains the pairing in more depth.

Rudraksha Shiv bracelet

At Rs 799 the Rudraksha Shiv bracelet is the simplest way to carry Shiva through the day, and it is the one we would suggest if you are buying for someone keeping the vrat for the first time. Rudraksha is traditionally associated with steadiness and calm, which is not a small thing across a night of jagran. If you are unsure whether women may wear the bead at all, that question is answered in full in our piece on women and rudraksha.

Moonstone bracelet for the Gauri half

If you want to mark Parvati rather than Shiva, a moonstone bracelet at Rs 1,799 is the fitting single stone. Moonstone is traditionally believed to support emotional steadiness, and its link to the moon suits a vrat that is measured by lunar days and often kept through the night. Its care needs are covered in our moonstone benefits and care guide.

Energising a Teej bracelet with Pran Pratishta

Many families prefer a new piece to be energised before it is first worn for an occasion. Soultheory offers Pran Pratishta, a Vedic energisation performed before dispatch, with the recorded ritual archived for every order. If you want it done before 14 September, order with enough time in hand, and if you are gifting, the same applies.

A short care note for the vrat itself. Fasting hands swell less and shrink slightly, so an elastic bracelet that fits on a normal day can slip on a nirjala day.

  • Remove the bracelet before the pre-dawn bath rather than wearing it through.
  • Keep rudraksha away from prolonged soaking; a rinse is fine, a soak is not.
  • Let mehendi dry completely before the bracelet goes back on, or the paste stains the beads.
  • Put it back on before the puja, not after, so it is worn for the whole observance.
  • If you do a milk or water abhishek at home, our abhishek on rudraksha guide sets out what the bead can and cannot take.

FAQ - Hartalika Teej 2026

When is Hartalika Teej in 2026?

Hartalika Teej 2026 falls on Monday, 14 September 2026. Tritiya tithi runs until 07:06 AM that morning and is therefore present at sunrise, which is the rule that places the vrat on the 14th rather than the 13th.

Is Hartalika Teej really on the same day as Ganesh Chaturthi this year?

Yes. Tritiya ends at 07:06 AM on 14 September and Chaturthi begins immediately after, so the Hartalika puja falls in the Pratahkal window at dawn and Ganesh Sthapana follows in the Madhyahna window later the same morning. The two do not clash.

Can unmarried girls keep the Hartalika Teej vrat?

Yes. The vrat originates in Parvati's own unmarried penance, so it is kept by both married women, for the wellbeing of their husbands, and unmarried girls. The fast rules are the same for both.

Do I have to keep it nirjala, without water?

The traditional form is nirjala, but a phalahar or water-permitted version is widely accepted and is the sensible choice if you are pregnant, nursing, diabetic, on medication or unwell. Speak to your doctor first if any of that applies to you.

Can I wear a rudraksha or crystal bracelet during the vrat?

Yes. No text prescribes one and none forbids one either. If you wear it, wear it for the whole vrat rather than putting it on midway, take it off before the pre-dawn bath, and let mehendi dry fully before it goes back on.

Wearing the day well

Hartalika Teej is a fast about resolve rather than display. Parvati made her lingam out of sand because that was what she had, and the day keeps that shape: what you offer matters less than that you meant it. In 2026 it arrives with Ganesha a few hours behind it, which makes 14 September a long and full morning in most homes.

From all of us at Soultheory, a steady and peaceful Hartalika Teej 2026. If you are also marking the close of Ganeshotsav, our note on the Anant Sutra and its fourteen knots covers the wrist thread tied on 25 September, and our Vat Purnima guide covers the other great vrat kept for a husband.
