Vishwakarma Puja 2026 - Date, Tool Puja Vidhi and What to Wear

Vishwakarma Puja 2026 falls on Thursday, 17 September, the day of Kanya Sankranti, and it is the one day in the Hindu year when the tools themselves are worshipped. Lathes, looms, sewing machines, spanners, delivery bikes, taxis and even office laptops are cleaned, marked with tilak and given the day off. This guide gives the date, the step-by-step puja vidhi for a workshop, shop or desk, how the day changes across India, and a straight answer to a question we hear every September - whether a crystal bracelet or a rudraksha has any role in a puja that is really about the tools of your trade.

Vishwakarma Puja 2026 - The Short Answer

Vishwakarma Puja 2026 is on Thursday, 17 September, and the core ritual is simple: clean your tools, rest them for the day, offer them tilak, flowers and a prayer to Lord Vishwakarma, and start work again the next morning.

The date is not set by a lunar tithi like most Hindu festivals. It follows the sun. Vishwakarma Puja is observed on Kanya Sankranti, the day the sun moves into Kanya (Virgo), which is why it lands on 16, 17 or 18 September almost every year. A sankranti is simply the sun's move from one rashi to the next. In the Bengali calendar the day is the last day of the month of Bhadra.

Because the day is fixed by the sun rather than a tithi window, most workshops simply hold the puja in the morning after sunrise and finish before noon. If your family or your union follows a pandit, take the exact muhurat from your local panchang.

Three things define the day everywhere it is kept:

  • The tools and machines are cleaned the evening before or at dawn
  • They are worshipped, not used, for the whole day
  • Prasad is shared with every worker, from the owner to the helper
Everything else, from the size of the pandal to the kites in the sky, is local colour.

Who Lord Vishwakarma Is and Why Tools Are Worshipped

Lord Vishwakarma is the divine architect and craftsman of the gods, and his puja honours the idea that skilled work is itself a form of worship. That is why the object in front of the altar is your lathe, your loom or your laptop.

The Architect of the Gods

The name Vishvakarman appears in two hymns of the tenth book of the Rigveda, where he is praised as the maker of the world. In later tradition, Vishvakarma becomes the master craftsman who builds for the devas. According to the Puranas and the epics, he built Dwarka for Lord Krishna, the golden city of Lanka and the Pushpaka Vimana, and he forged celestial weapons including Indra's vajra. In Bengal he is usually shown riding an elephant and holding the instruments of measurement and building, which is why pandal images there look so different from the four-armed figure seen in calendar art elsewhere.

Why the Tool Itself Is Honoured

According to traditional belief, a tool that feeds a family is a partner in that family's dharma, not a lifeless object. So on this one day the carpenter does not cut, the tailor does not stitch and the driver does not drive for hire. The rest is the offering. A tool that is worked hard on its own puja day has, in the traditional view, not really been thanked.

The idea is still official in a modern form. The Government of India launched the PM Vishwakarma scheme on Vishwakarma Jayanti in September 2023 to support artisans and craftspeople in 18 traditional trades, including carpenters, blacksmiths, goldsmiths, potters and tailors. The choice of date says a great deal about how closely the festival is tied to working hands.

Where and How India Observes Vishwakarma Puja

Vishwakarma Puja is biggest in eastern India, where factories and workshops hold full pandal pujas, while the south honours tools on Ayudha Puja during Navratri instead. The idea is the same across the country, only the day moves.

Region When in 2026 What the day looks like
West Bengal, Assam, Tripura Thursday, 17 September Factory and workshop pandals, machines rested, kites flown in many towns
Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha Thursday, 17 September Garages, auto stands, printing presses and small factories hold puja
Nepal Kanya Sankranti Workshops, tools and vehicles decorated and worshipped
Parts of North India The day after Diwali, in November Tools and workshops worshipped alongside Govardhan Puja
Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala Maha Navami, Monday, 19 October Tools, books and vehicles worshipped as Ayudha Puja
In Kolkata, Asansol, Jamshedpur and Dhanbad, the day has the feel of a small Durga Puja for the industrial belt. Pandals go up inside factory gates, loudspeakers play from the morning, and the evening sky fills with kites. In smaller towns the scale is a single garage or a tailoring shop with a framed picture, a garland and a plate of sweets, and that puja is exactly as complete.

If you live in the south, the tool puja you grew up with is Ayudha Puja on the ninth day of Navratri. Our golu padi arrangement guide shows where that day sits in the Navratri calendar. If your workplace follows the September date, the steps below apply.

Vishwakarma Puja Vidhi for Tools and Machines, Step by Step

The Vishwakarma Puja vidhi has three phases: cleaning and switching off the day before, the puja itself in the morning, and a respectful restart the next day. Nothing in it needs expensive samagri.

Puja samagri to keep ready:

  • A picture or small murti of Lord Vishwakarma
  • A kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut
  • Roli or kumkum, chandan paste and akshat (unbroken rice)
  • Kalava (mauli) thread, loose flowers and a marigold garland
  • Incense, a diya, camphor, and sweets or fruit for prasad

Before the Puja - Clean, Switch Off, Unplug

Start the evening before. Clean every machine and tool properly, wipe away grease and dust, and oil what needs oiling so it rests in good condition. Switch off electrical machines at the mains and unplug laptops, sewing machines and power tools. This step is about safety as much as devotion: water, wet tilak and ghee lamps should never meet a live socket or a motor. Sweep the floor and draw a small rangoli where the altar will stand.

The Puja Itself

Per Vedic tradition, a puja opens with a sankalp, a short statement of who is praying and why. The rest of the sequence follows naturally:

  1. Bathe, wear clean clothes and sit facing east if the space allows
  2. Place the Vishwakarma picture on a raised, clean cloth with the kalash beside it
  3. Take the sankalp, naming yourself, your trade and your prayer for safe and honest work
  4. Offer flowers, akshat and tilak to the picture first
  5. Apply a small dot of roli and chandan to each main tool or machine, on a dry metal or wooden surface
  6. Tie a short length of kalava on a handle or a fixed part that does not move
  7. Light the diya and incense and chant "Om Vishwakarmane Namah" or pray in your own words
  8. Perform aarti, moving the plate past the tools as well as the picture
  9. Share prasad with every person who works there

After the Puja - The Next Morning

The tools rest until the next day. The following morning, bow once to the workspace, remove wilted flowers, and begin work. The kalava on tools is usually left until it frays and falls on its own. Cut it off straight away if it sits anywhere near a blade, belt, chain or wheel.

Vishwakarma Puja at the Shop, Office and on Vehicles

The same puja scales down neatly to a shop counter, an office desk or a vehicle: clean it, rest it, mark it, and thank it. What changes is what counts as the tool.

The Shop Counter

For a trader, the tools are the counter, the weighing scale, the billing machine and the account books. Clean them, place a tilak on the scale and on the cover of the book, and keep the day's prasad at the counter. If you already keep a raw pyrite stone or a Lakshmi Yantra pyramid there, dust it and leave it at the side of the altar, not in the centre. The day belongs to Vishwakarma and the tools. For setting up a counter from scratch, our new shop opening guide is the better read.

Laptops and Office Equipment

For software engineers, designers and accountants, the laptop is the tool, and many offices now keep a small Vishwakarma Puja at reception. Shut the laptop down, close the lid and place it on a clean cloth. Put the tilak and the flower on the lid, never on the keyboard or the vents, and keep the diya well away from it. If you keep crystals on your desk through the year, the office desk crystal guide explains which ones stay and where they go.

Cars, Bikes, Autos and Trucks

Drivers and transporters wash the vehicle, draw an Om or swastika with roli on the bonnet or the fuel tank, tie a kalava on the mirror stem and break a coconut in front of the wheels. Keep the thread short and clear of the handlebar, steering and pedals. The full order of a vahan puja, and where a stone can and cannot sit inside a vehicle, is in our guides to car vahan puja and bike vahan puja.

What to Wear on Vishwakarma Puja and Where Crystals Fit

On Vishwakarma Puja, wear clean traditional clothes and the sacred beads you already wear daily, and treat your work bracelet as part of your working kit that gets cleaned along with the tools. A crystal is not a tool and never replaces the Vishwakarma picture or the kalash.

Stones Traditionally Associated With Work

If you already wear a bracelet for your working life, puja eve is a natural time to cleanse it. Pyrite is traditionally associated with steady effort and the rewards of honest work, which is why it is popular with shopkeepers and the self-employed; our pyrite bracelet guide covers it in depth. Tiger eye is traditionally believed to support focus and confidence at work. The Rudraksh, Pyrite and Tiger Eye bracelet combines both with a rudraksha bead for people who want one piece for the workplace. For a wider list by profession, see crystal bracelets for career growth.

A rudraksha mala or bracelet can be worn right through the puja. According to traditional belief, rudraksha worn with respect is welcome at any puja, and nothing about a tool puja changes that.

The Bracelet Is Part of the Kit, Not the Offering

Here is the honest part. Soultheory sells bracelets, pyramids and rudraksha, but we do not sell Vishwakarma murtis, puja kits or kalava, and nothing we sell is needed for this puja. A few clear rules follow from that:

  • Cleanse your work bracelet the same evening you clean your tools, using the gentle methods in our crystal bracelet care guide
  • Do not place a crystal bracelet on the altar in place of the Vishwakarma picture or the kalash
  • Never tie or hang a bracelet on a machine, a fan belt or a steering column, where it can catch in a moving part
  • If a priest ties kalava on your wrist, it can sit beside a bracelet; our kalava and mauli thread rules cover which hand

Mistakes to Avoid on Vishwakarma Puja

The most common mistakes on Vishwakarma Puja are about safety and respect rather than ritual detail. A simple, safe puja is better than an elaborate, careless one.

  • Doing tilak or aarti on a machine that is still switched on or plugged in
  • Pouring water or ghee over electronics, motors or wiring
  • Leaving a burning diya unattended in a workshop with oil, thinner or sawdust nearby
  • Tying long kalava threads near blades, belts, chains or wheels
  • Flying kites with glass-coated manja, which injures birds and two-wheeler riders and is banned in many cities
  • Using the tools for paid work on the puja day itself
  • Serving prasad to the owners and forgetting the helpers, cleaners and drivers
  • Treating a crystal, yantra or pyramid as a replacement for the Vishwakarma picture
