Ayudha Puja at Home: Step by Step Vidhi for Navratri 2026

Ayudha Puja at home is the one day of Navratri when the things that feed your family get a day off and a garland. In Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and much of Andhra Pradesh, the scissors, the laptop, the sewing machine, the scooter and the child's school books are all cleaned, marked with sandal paste and kumkum, and placed before the Devi on Maha Navami. In 2026 that day is Monday, 19 October, and the tools come back into use on Vijayadashami, Tuesday, 20 October. This guide walks through the full home vidhi step by step, what to place and what to leave out, how the day sits beside Saraswati Puja, and where a rudraksha or crystal bracelet fits without getting stained in the process.

When is Ayudha Puja in 2026?

Ayudha Puja falls on Maha Navami, the ninth day of Sharad Navratri, which is Monday, 19 October 2026. Sharad Navratri runs from Ghatasthapana on Sunday, 11 October to Vijayadashami on Tuesday, 20 October, and the same dates appear across our golu padi arrangement guide and kalash sthapana guide.

Why the exact start time still varies

Navami is a lunar tithi, and a tithi does not begin at midnight. In some years it starts in the afternoon of the previous day, so families follow the local panchang or the family priest for the hour. The date above is the civil day on which the puja is observed.

The same idea on a different day

North and east India honour tools on Vishwakarma Puja in September. The south keeps it for Navratri. The logic is identical, only the calendar anchor moves.

What is Ayudha Puja and why are tools worshipped?

Ayudha Puja is the worship of the instruments of one's livelihood, from weapons in older times to laptops and vehicles today. The word ayudha means weapon or implement, and per Vedic tradition every tool that sustains a household is treated as carrying a share of Shakti.

The Durga and Mahishasura story

Navratri retells the battle of Durga against Mahishasura. The gods each gave her a weapon, and on the ninth day those weapons are honoured for the victory they won. Resting the tools of your own work is traditionally believed to echo that moment.

The Pandavas and the shami tree

A second thread comes from the Mahabharata. The Pandavas hid their weapons in a shami tree (Prosopis cineraria) during their year in disguise and recovered them on Vijayadashami. This is why many families worship the tools on Navami and pick them up again only the next morning.

Mysuru and the royal weapons

At the Mysore Dasara, the palace has long held its own Ayudha Puja for the royal weapons and the state elephants and horses. Homes follow a smaller version of the same pattern. You can read the broader regional picture on the Ayudha Puja page.

What to place for Ayudha Puja at home

Place every object that earns, protects or teaches in your house, cleaned and dry, in front of the Devi picture or the golu. A household puja is complete with a handful of items. Nothing needs to be bought new.

Common items families keep for the day:

  • Kitchen knives, the aruval, scissors and the grinding stone
  • Laptops, phones, calculators and the shop's billing machine
  • Sewing machine, tailoring scissors and measuring tape
  • School books, notebooks, pens and exam hall tickets
  • Musical instruments such as veena, violin, mridangam or harmonium
  • Farm and garden tools, spanners, drills and the toolbox
  • Scooter, bike or car keys, with the vehicle itself decorated outside
  • The account book or ledger of a family business

What to leave out

Leave out anything broken, anything borrowed and not yet returned, and anything unwashed. Medicines are usually kept aside rather than placed as an implement. Money is placed only if your family custom already does it.

Step by step Ayudha Puja vidhi

The home vidhi has nine steps and takes about forty minutes once the cleaning is done. Follow your family's order where it differs.

  1. Clean everything the evening before. Wipe tools, dust books, wash the vehicle. Water must be fully dry before any paste goes on.
  2. Clear the space. Spread a clean cloth or banana leaf in front of the Devi picture, the kalash or the lowest golu step.
  3. Arrange the tools. Books and instruments go closest to the Devi, then work tools, with keys placed on top of the pile.
  4. Apply chandan and kumkum. A single dot of sandalwood paste with a kumkum dot on top, on a non-working surface of each tool.
  5. Offer flowers. Jasmine, marigold or any fresh flower on each item. Mango leaves or a small garland on the vehicle.
  6. Light the lamp and incense. Ghee or sesame oil lamp, then agarbatti.
  7. Offer naivedyam. Pori (puffed rice), roasted gram, jaggery, banana and sundal are the traditional plate.
  8. Chant and do aarti. Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati stotras, or simply the names of the Devi, then camphor aarti over the whole arrangement.
  9. Leave the tools resting. Do not use them for the rest of the day, and take them back on Vijayadashami morning after a short prayer.

The vehicle ritual outside

For the scooter or car, families tie banana stems or mango leaves to the front, draw a kolam near the wheels and break an ash gourd (Benincasa hispida) smeared with kumkum, which is traditionally believed to remove drishti. Some place a lemon under each wheel to crush when the vehicle moves on Vijayadashami. Our car vahan puja guide and bike vahan puja guide cover the vehicle side in detail.

The naivedyam plate

Puffed rice with jaggery and roasted gram is the classic Ayudha Puja prasad in Tamil homes. It is fully sattvik and fits Jain and Vaishnav kitchens without change.

Ayudha Puja vs Saraswati Puja vs Vidyarambham

Ayudha Puja and Saraswati Puja are usually done together on Navami, and Vidyarambham follows on Vijayadashami. They are three parts of the same two days, not competing rituals.

Observance Day in 2026 What is worshipped Where it is strongest
Ayudha Puja Monday, 19 October (Navami) Tools, vehicles, machines, weapons Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh
Saraswati Puja Monday, 19 October (Navami) Books, pens, instruments Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka
Pooja Vaypu Evening before Navami in Kerala Books placed for rest Kerala
Vidyarambham Tuesday, 20 October (Vijayadashami) A child's first letters Kerala, Tamil Nadu
Vijayadashami Tuesday, 20 October Taking tools and books back All India

What happens on Vidyarambham

On Vidyarambham, a small child writes the first letters in a plate of rice with a finger, guided by an elder or teacher. Adults often write a line too before opening their own books again. More on the day itself is on the Vijayadashami and Saraswati Puja pages.

Students and exam books

Students place their books for Saraswati Puja and do not study that day, which many parents find hard in an exam year. If that is your house, our stones for students and exam focus guide covers the study side for the days after.

Can you place a rudraksha or crystal bracelet in Ayudha Puja?

Yes, you can place a rudraksha or crystal bracelet beside the tools if your family wishes, but it is not an implement and is not required. A rudraksha mala is already a sacred object, so many families keep it with the Devi rather than in the tool pile.

Keep the kumkum off the beads

Do not dot kumkum or turmeric directly on rudraksha, karungali, howlite or lava beads. They are porous and the mark stays for good. Put the chandan dot on the cloth or plate under the bracelet instead. Our haldi kumkum stain guide lists which stones survive puja pigments and which do not.

Wearing it again on Vijayadashami

If the bracelet rested with the Devi overnight, put it back on during Vijayadashami morning prayer along with the tools. In crystal healing practice, that return after a day of rest is treated as a fresh start, much like the charge after a new moon.

Crystals that suit the puja space

Clear quartz, known as sphatik, is the most common stone kept in a south Indian puja shelf. See our crystals for the puja room guide for the rest.

Common Ayudha Puja mistakes to avoid

Most mistakes on the day come from rushing the cleaning or the drying. They are easy to avoid.

  • Applying paste on wet steel, which leaves rust spots by morning
  • Putting kumkum on laptop keyboards, screens or charging ports
  • Placing sharp tools where children or pets can reach them
  • Stacking books on the floor without a cloth underneath
  • Starting the vehicle for a quick errand on Navami evening
  • Using the tools before the Vijayadashami prayer the next morning

If you must work on Navami

Doctors, drivers and shop owners often cannot rest their tools for a full day. Many families do the puja at dawn and using the tools after offering a short prayer of apology. The intention matters more than the empty day.

Ayudha Puja in an office or shop

For an office, the vidhi is the same at a larger scale. Machines are cleaned, a Devi picture and kalash go at the entrance, and staff share pori and sweets after the aarti.

In a family business, the owner or the senior most staff member usually performs the aarti, and every staff member offers a flower to their own workstation. It is common to give staff the rest of the day off.

Many offices in Chennai and Bengaluru keep the puja short and optional, so staff of every faith can join the prasad and the holiday without joining the ritual.
