- Many families do a smaller visarjan on day 1.5, day 3, day 5 or day 7. Anant Chaturdashi is the last visarjan date, not the only one.
- Pitru Paksha opens the very next morning. If you were planning to buy or gift anything auspicious, 25 September is your last clear day for roughly two weeks.
What the Anant Sutra actually is
The Anant Sutra is a cotton thread, dyed with turmeric and kumkum, carrying fourteen knots. Per Vedic tradition the fourteen knots stand for the fourteen lokas, the worlds of Hindu cosmology, all of which are said to rest in Anant. That is precisely why the vrat sits on a Chaturdashi, a fourteenth tithi, and on no other day.
Here is the part most people get wrong, including people who tie one every year.
The sutra is a Vishnu observance, not a Ganesha one
Anant is a form of Vishnu. The vrat, the katha of Sushila and Kaundinya, and the thread all belong to Vishnu worship. It happens to fall on the day Ganesha leaves, so the two have fused in public memory - but you are not tying a Ganesha thread. Nothing is wrong with observing both on the same day. It is worth knowing which is which.
It is a vrat object, not an accessory
A kalava or mauli is tied at the start of almost any puja and carries no fixed count. The Anant Sutra is different on three counts:
- The knot count is fixed at fourteen and is the whole point.
- It is tied after the puja and the 108 recitations, not before.
- It has a defined life, which is more than can be said for most things on a wrist.
Anant Sutra wearing rules: wrist, side and how long
Traditional practice is reasonably consistent on the side and genuinely inconsistent on the duration. An honest guide should say so rather than pick one and pretend.
The side. According to traditional belief, men tie the sutra on the right arm and women on the left. This is the most widely followed instruction and the easiest to honour.
The duration. This is where families differ, and both customs are old:
- Some traditions remove it after fourteen days, matching the fourteen knots.
- Others keep it on until the next Anant Chaturdashi, replacing it annually.
- A third practice removes it once it frays naturally, then immerses it.
What tradition asks you not to do: do not tear it off in irritation, do not bin it with household waste, and do not re-tie it once it has come off. When it comes off, it is done. Immerse it in flowing water or in the same water the idol went into.
Can you wear a crystal bracelet with the Anant Sutra?
Short answer: yes, and no text says otherwise.
The longer answer matters more, because this is where a lot of confident nonsense circulates. There is no scriptural rule anywhere about crystal bracelets and the Anant Sutra, for the simple reason that crystal bracelets are not in the texts. Anyone quoting you a shastra on the subject has invented one. What tradition does regulate is the sutra itself - and everything sensible follows from respecting that.
Give the sutra its own arm
The cleanest arrangement, and the one most pandits suggest when asked, is straightforward:
- The Anant Sutra goes on its prescribed arm - right for men, left for women.
- Rudraksha and crystal bracelets move to the other arm for the duration.
- If you wear a bracelet on the sutra arm anyway, keep the sutra closer to the wrist bone, undisturbed.
Rudraksha is the one bead nobody asks you to remove
Per Vedic tradition, rudraksha is worn continuously and is not set aside for another observance. If you already wear a rudraksha bracelet daily, Anant Chaturdashi changes nothing about it. Move it across if it sits on the sutra arm; otherwise carry on.
The one thing genuinely worth avoiding
Do not tie the sutra over a metal bracelet or kada so that it sits pinned between metal and skin. It will discolour within days, and the turmeric will stain the metal. That is the only combination that reliably goes wrong.

- Skip anything delicate on visarjan day. You will be near water, near crowds, and eventually near a queue.

Two separate disposal questions land on the same afternoon, and they have different answers.
Last year's sutra
If you kept the previous sutra for the year, this is the day it goes. Remove it, do not cut it if you can help it, and immerse it with the idol or in flowing water. It is a consecrated object and it leaves the way consecrated objects leave.
Your bracelet stays with you
Your rudraksha or crystal bracelet does not go into the water. This sounds obvious until you are standing at a ghat watching everything else be immersed. A bracelet is worn, not offered. The only case for immersion is a broken rudraksha, which has its own visarjan procedure.
Practical notes for the day itself:
- Take the bracelet off before you enter the water. Wet knots loosen and beads are lost at ghats every single year.
- Rinse and dry it afterwards if it has been near immersion water, which carries clay, sindoor and oil.
- Pitru Paksha starts the next morning, and rudraksha rules during that fortnight differ from the rest of the year - worth reading before 26 September.
On silver-capped beads
If your rudraksha is capped in silver, check the cap before immersion season. Genuine silver is hallmarked to standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards, and a hallmarked cap will simply tarnish and clean up. An unmarked white-metal cap will often pit after contact with visarjan water and never recover.
