Kemadruma dosha remedies, in the traditional view, aim to give a lonely Moon company and support rather than to fight it: Monday worship of Lord Shiva, the Chandra beej mantra, charity of rice and milk, care for one's mother, and a 2 mukhi rudraksha or a moonstone worn as a gentle daily support. In this guide the Soultheory Editorial Team explains what kemadruma dosha means in Vedic astrology, how it is often cancelled in the same chart, why the classical pearl is an animal product, and the free practices that are traditionally believed to matter most.
Kemadruma Dosha Remedies at a Glance
Per Vedic tradition, the most widely recommended kemadruma dosha remedies are Monday worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, japa of the Chandra mantra, Purnima and Monday observance, charity of white foods, and a 2 mukhi rudraksha for the Moon. Moonstone is the gentle substitute stone, and the classical pearl comes last, only after a personal chart reading.

What Kemadruma Dosha Means in Vedic Astrology
Kemadruma dosha, also called kemadruma yoga, is the name astrologers give to a birth chart where the Moon has no planet in the house just before it or the house just after it. In plain terms, the second and twelfth houses counted from the Moon are both empty. Most astrologers do not count the Sun, Rahu or Ketu when checking this, so only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn decide it.
The Moon (Chandra) is traditionally associated with the mind, emotions, the mother and a sense of being supported. When it stands alone with no neighbours, tradition says the mind can feel unsupported, and the yoga is often described as a pattern of loneliness, worry or uneven fortune. You can read more about the deity behind the Moon on Wikipedia's page on Chandra.
Is kemadruma in the classical texts?
Yes. Unlike some modern dosha names, kemadruma is a classical yoga. It is described in works such as the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika, alongside the other lunar yogas sunapha, anapha and durudhara, which form when the Moon does have planets beside it.
Kemadruma bhanga, the cancellation
This is the most important point in this guide. The same classical texts list several conditions that cancel the yoga, called kemadruma bhanga. Many astrologers say that a large share of charts with kemadruma also carry one of these cancellations:
- A planet in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the Moon
- A planet in a kendra from the ascendant (lagna)
- Jupiter aspecting the Moon
- The Moon itself placed in a kendra
- A strong, bright Moon close to Purnima
- The Moon aspected by all or most of the other planets
The Classical Gemstone and the Vegetarian Question
The classical ratna for the Moon is the pearl (moti). This is where kemadruma dosha remedies need care, for two reasons.
Pearl needs a chart reading
Pearl strengthens the Moon, and astrologers usually ask for a chart reading before recommending it, since a strong Moon is not always what a chart needs. It is traditionally set in silver and worn on the little finger, starting on a Monday.
Pearl is an animal product
A pearl forms inside a living oyster or mussel, so for Jain and many Vaishnav households it is not a vegetarian choice. Soultheory does not sell pearl or mother of pearl for this reason. Our guide on whether pearl is vegetarian explains the question in full.
Moonstone as the gentle substitute
Moonstone (chandrakanta) is widely listed as the upratna, or substitute stone, for the Moon. It is a feldspar mineral with a soft, milky sheen, gentle in tradition, and many people wear it as an everyday Moon stone without a chart reading.
The Rudraksha Bead for the Moon
Rudraksha is often the first choice for a dosha because it is a seed, not a strong gemstone, and tradition holds that it supports rather than amplifies. The bead is the seed of the Elaeocarpus ganitrus tree. Our navagraha rudraksha guide maps each mukhi to its planet.
2 mukhi rudraksha for the Moon
The 2 mukhi rudraksha is the classic Moon bead, linked to Ardhanarishvara, the united form of Shiva and Parvati. Since kemadruma is a yoga of a Moon left alone, many families value this bead for its traditional meaning of union and togetherness. It is often first worn on a Monday.
Sphatik in some traditions
Some lineages also use a sphatik (clear quartz) mala for Moon and Shiva worship, because of its clear, cool nature. It is a mineral and suits families who prefer a stone to a bead.
Monday Worship, Lord Shiva and the Mantras
Per Vedic tradition, devotion is the heart of every Moon remedy. Lord Shiva wears the crescent Moon on his head, which is why Shiva worship on Mondays is the most common practice for a troubled Moon. Practices that are traditionally believed to help include:
- Offering water or milk to a Shivling on Monday mornings
- Chanting the Chandra beej mantra, Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandramase Namah, 108 times
- Chanting Om Namah Shivaya through the day
- Keeping the Somvar vrat, a simple Monday fast
- Observing Purnima, the full Moon day, with prayer
- Chanting the Mahamrityunjaya mantra for general protection
- Reciting the Chandra stotra from the Navagraha stotram
Free and Simple Remedies Tradition Values Most
The remedies astrologers stress most for the Moon cost nothing, because the Moon is traditionally associated with the mother, the home and a calm mind. These everyday practices are often recommended:
- Respecting, calling and caring for your mother or an elder woman in the family
- Giving rice, milk, curd or white cloth on Mondays
- Offering drinking water to people and birds in summer
- Keeping a regular sleep time and a steady daily routine
- Spending quiet time near water or under the evening Moon
- Staying in touch with friends instead of withdrawing
- Keeping Monday food simple and sattvic
What a Bead or Stone Cannot Do
A rudraksha or crystal is a devotional and cultural practice. It does not decide the outcome of a career, a marriage or a court case, and no one can promise a result from wearing it. Individual experiences vary. If you are facing low mood, loneliness, a health, money or legal problem, please speak to a qualified doctor, counsellor, adviser or lawyer, and use these traditions alongside that help.

FAQ About Kemadruma Dosha Remedies
Which rudraksha is best for kemadruma dosha?
Per Vedic tradition, the 2 mukhi rudraksha is the Moon bead, so it is the usual first choice. It is linked to Ardhanarishvara and is often first worn on a Monday.
Can I wear pearl for kemadruma dosha?
Only after a chart reading, according to traditional astrologers. Pearl is also an animal product, so many vegetarian families choose moonstone instead.
How do I know if kemadruma dosha is cancelled in my chart?
Astrologers check for kemadruma bhanga, such as a planet in a kendra from the Moon or Jupiter aspecting the Moon. A trusted astrologer can read this for your chart.
Which god should I worship for kemadruma dosha?
Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on Mondays, along with Chandra Dev. Many families also chant the Mahamrityunjaya mantra.
Is kemadruma dosha permanent?
Tradition says its effect depends on the whole chart and the running planetary periods, and cancellations are common. Most astrologers treat it as one factor, not a fixed fate.
