Kartik Month 2026: Kartik Snan, Deep Daan Rules, What to Wear

Kartik month 2026 is the holiest month of the Hindu year for devotees of Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna, and it is the month that carries Diwali, Govardhan Puja, Dev Uthani Ekadashi and Tulsi Vivah. Per Vedic tradition, a small daily practice kept for these thirty days, an early bath, a ghee lamp and a few minutes of prayer, is traditionally believed to carry more merit than the same practice done at any other time of year. This Soultheory guide covers the 2026 dates, how Kartik snan and deep daan are done, the food and lifestyle rules most families follow, and what to wear through the month.

Kartik month 2026 dates

In 2026, Kartik snan begins at sunrise on Monday, 26 October 2026 (the Purnima tithi of Sharad Purnima is still running at sunrise that day) and the month of practice closes on Kartik Purnima, Tuesday, 24 November 2026. Sunrise times differ by city, so check your local panchang for the exact moment to begin your morning bath.

There are two ways the Hindu calendar counts this month, and it helps to know which one your family follows:

  • Purnimanta calendar (most of North India): the lunar month of Kartik begins right after Sharad Purnima, so Diwali falls in the middle of Kartik.
  • Amanta calendar (Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana): the lunar month of Kartik begins the day after Diwali.
  • Kartik snan and the Damodar vrat: in most traditions the thirty days of bathing and lamp offering are counted from Sharad Purnima to Kartik Purnima, whichever calendar your family uses.
You can read more about how the month is named and counted on the Kartika month page on Wikipedia.

Why Kartik month is considered so sacred

According to the Skanda Purana and the Padma Purana, Kartik is the month most dear to Lord Vishnu, and it is traditionally believed that no other month equals it for prayer, charity and fasting. Lord Vishnu is said to wake from his four-month yogic sleep (chaturmas) on Dev Uthani Ekadashi in the bright half of Kartik, which is why weddings and other auspicious ceremonies traditionally resume after this day.

In Vaishnava homes and in ISKCON temples, the month is also called Damodar month. It remembers the childhood pastime in which Mother Yashoda tied little Krishna to a grinding mortar with a rope around his belly (dama means rope, udara means belly). Devotees sing the Damodarashtakam, an eight-verse prayer from the Padma Purana, every evening and offer a small ghee lamp while singing it.

Kartik is also the month of Tulsi. The Tulsi plant is worshipped every evening with a lamp, and the month reaches its peak with Tulsi Vivah, the ceremonial wedding of Tulsi with Lord Vishnu in his Shaligram form.

What is Kartik snan and how to do it

Kartik snan is the early morning bath taken every day of the month, ideally before sunrise. Per Vedic tradition, a bath in a holy river such as the Ganga, Yamuna or Narmada during Kartik is believed to be especially purifying, but a bath at home is fully accepted, and many families add a few drops of Ganga jal to the bucket.

A simple Kartik snan routine looks like this:

  • Wake up during Brahma muhurta, roughly 90 minutes before sunrise.
  • Take your bath before the sun rises, adding Ganga jal to the water if you have it.
  • Wear fresh, clean clothes, and many devotees choose yellow or white.
  • Offer water (arghya) to the rising sun from a copper lota.
  • Light a ghee lamp before the image of Lord Vishnu or Lord Krishna, or before your Tulsi plant.
  • Chant a short prayer, a round of the Vishnu or Krishna mantra, or a chapter of the Bhagavad Gita.
  • Water the Tulsi plant and, if possible, walk around it once with folded hands.
If you cannot manage the full month, families commonly keep the practice for the last five days, from Dev Uthani Ekadashi to Kartik Purnima, a stretch known as Bhishma Panchak.

Deep daan: the Kartik lamp offering

Deep daan means the gift of a lamp. Through Kartik, it is traditionally believed that offering even one small lamp to the Lord carries great merit, which is why temples, ghats and homes glow every evening of the month.

Where to offer the lamp

The most common places are in front of the Tulsi plant at dusk, at the home altar while singing the Damodarashtakam, at a temple, and on the steps of a river or lake. In Varanasi, the month ends with Dev Deepawali on Kartik Purnima, when the ghats are lit with lakhs of diyas.

What kind of lamp to use

A clay diya with a cotton wick and pure ghee is the classic choice. Sesame oil is also traditional. Light the lamp, hold it before the deity, and move it in small circles while singing or chanting, then place it safely where it can burn down by itself.

Lamp offering for the whole family

In many homes, every family member, including children, offers their own small lamp each evening. It is a gentle way to bring the whole household into the month without long rituals.

Kartik month rules: what to follow and what to avoid

There is no single rulebook, and each family follows its own custom. The practices below are the most widely followed:

  • Avoid non-vegetarian food, eggs, onion, garlic and alcohol for the whole month.
  • Many Vaishnava families also avoid urad dal and brinjal during Kartik, following local custom.
  • Keep a personal vow, such as giving up one food you love, sugar, or screen time after dinner.
  • Eat one simple, home-cooked sattvic meal on Ekadashi days, or fast if your health allows.
  • Give charity, especially lamps, food, warm clothes and grain, to those in need.
  • Speak gently, avoid arguments and keep the home clean, since Kartik is a month of inner discipline.
  • Read or listen to the Bhagavad Gita, the Damodar lila or the Vishnu Sahasranama.
Fasting and food rules are a personal choice. If you are pregnant, elderly, diabetic or on medication, please talk to your doctor before keeping any fast and choose a lighter vow instead.

What to wear during Kartik month

Through Kartik, devotees keep their appearance simple and clean. Yellow is traditionally associated with Lord Vishnu and is a popular colour for the morning puja, and white is chosen for its sense of purity.

Many Vaishnavas wear a Tulsi kanthi mala around the neck through the year, and Kartik is the month it feels most meaningful. Rudraksha is traditionally linked with Lord Shiva, yet many families wear both beads together without any conflict. Our guide on wearing rudraksha and tulsi mala together explains how.

A few practical tips for the month:

  • Take off any bead bracelet before the river or bucket bath and put it back on after you dry off.
  • Keep your mala or bracelet away from the lamp flame and hot ghee during deep daan.
  • If you chant on a mala, keep it in a clean cloth pouch and use the same mala for the whole month.

When does Kartik month start in 2026?

Kartik snan and the Damodar vrat begin at sunrise the morning after Sharad Purnima night and continue until Kartik Purnima. Can I do Kartik snan at home?

Yes. A river bath is traditionally preferred, but a bath at home before sunrise, with a little Ganga jal added to the water if you have it, is fully accepted by most families and temples.

What is the Damodar lamp offering?

Every evening of Kartik, devotees sing the Damodarashtakam and offer a small ghee lamp to Lord Krishna in his Damodar form. It is traditionally believed that even one lamp offered with devotion in this month is very dear to the Lord.

What should not be eaten in Kartik month?

Most families avoid non-vegetarian food, eggs, onion, garlic and alcohol for the month. Many Vaishnava households also avoid urad dal and brinjal. Follow your family custom and speak to your doctor before any strict fast.

Can I wear rudraksha during Kartik month?

Yes. Rudraksha can be worn through Kartik. Remove it during the bath and keep it away from the lamp flame, then wear it again after puja.
