Ahoi Ashtami 2026 falls on Sunday, 1 November 2026, three days after Karva Chauth and about a week before Diwali. On this day mothers keep a day-long vrat for the long life and well-being of their children, draw the image of Ahoi Mata on the wall, and break the fast only after sighting the first stars of the evening. It is traditionally believed to be one of the most heartfelt fasts of the Kartik month, and it is kept most widely in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh. This Soultheory guide covers the timings, the puja vidhi, the vrat rules, the Ahoi Mata katha, the syahu mala custom and what to wear on the day.
When is Ahoi Ashtami 2026? Date and puja timings
Ahoi Ashtami is on a Sunday this year. It is kept on the Ashtami (eighth lunar day) of Krishna Paksha in Kartik month as counted in the Purnimanta calendar of North India. In the Amanta calendar used in Gujarat, Maharashtra and the South, the same day falls in Ashwin month, so the name of the month differs but the day does not.

What is Ahoi Ashtami and why do mothers fast?
Ahoi Ashtami is a mother's vrat. Per Hindu tradition, a mother fasts from sunrise until she sees the stars, and prays to Ahoi Mata, a form of Goddess Parvati, for the health, safety and long life of her children. The fast was once kept mainly for sons, but most families today keep it for all their children, daughters included.
The day sits inside a cluster of Kartik observances. The Karva Chauth vrat comes three days earlier, and Dhanteras and Diwali follow soon after. In many homes the karva (clay pot) filled with water on Karva Chauth is kept and used again in the Ahoi puja, which ties the two fasts together. You can read more about the month itself in the Kartika month entry on Wikipedia.
The same night is also marked by the Radha Kund snan at Govardhan near Mathura, where devotees take a midnight dip in the sacred pond. It is traditionally associated with prayers for children and family.
The Ahoi Mata katha in short
The story read at the puja is simple and is told in many versions. A woman with seven sons went to the forest a few days before Diwali to dig soil for plastering her home. While digging, her spade accidentally killed the cub of a syahu (porcupine). Within a year, misfortune struck her family and her sons were lost one after another.
Full of grief, she told the elders of the village what had happened. They advised her to repent sincerely and to worship Ahoi Mata on Kartik Krishna Ashtami, drawing the goddess along with the syahu and her cubs. She did so with devotion year after year, and according to the katha, her sons were returned to her. This is why the Ahoi image always shows the syahu and its young beside the goddess, and why many mothers still avoid digging soil or using sharp tools on this day. You can read a short overview of the festival on Wikipedia's Ahoi Ashtami page.
Ahoi Ashtami puja vidhi step by step
The puja is done in the evening, during the muhurat or as close to it as possible. The steps below follow the common North Indian practice; your family custom comes first wherever it differs.
- Wake before sunrise, bathe and take a sankalpa (resolve) to keep the vrat for your children.
- Clean the puja wall and draw Ahoi Mata with geru (red ochre) or use a printed Ahoi calendar. The drawing usually shows eight corners (ashta koshthak), the syahu and her cubs, and small figures for the children of the house.
- Place a kalash or the karva from Karva Chauth filled with water near the image, and tie a kalava (sacred thread) around its neck.
- In the evening, offer roli, rice, flowers and the bhog of puri, halwa and boiled chana to Ahoi Mata.
- Read or listen to the Ahoi Mata katha with your children sitting close by.
- Step out at star sighting time, offer arghya (water) to the stars from the karva, and pray for your children.
- Break the fast with water and the prasad, then share the bhog with the family.
Ahoi Ashtami puja samagri checklist
- Ahoi Mata image drawn in geru, or a printed Ahoi calendar
- A kalash or the karva from Karva Chauth, filled with water
- Roli, akshat (whole rice), haldi and kalava thread
- Fresh flowers, a diya and incense
- Bhog of puri, halwa, boiled black chana and sweets
- Eight puas or meethi puri, as many families offer eight in honour of the Ashtami
- Water in a lota for arghya to the stars
- The syahu mala, if your family follows that custom
- A few coins or a small gift kept aside for the mother-in-law or an elder woman
Ahoi Ashtami vrat rules
Most mothers keep the vrat nirjala, without food or water, from sunrise until the stars appear. Others take water or fruit through the day. Per Hindu tradition, the intention matters more than the strictness, and anyone who is pregnant, nursing, unwell or on regular medicine should keep a lighter fast and follow their doctor's advice.
- Begin the vrat at sunrise after a bath and a short prayer.
- Avoid digging soil, gardening or using sharp tools such as knives and scissors, in memory of the katha.
- Keep the day calm; many families avoid arguments, gossip and harsh words.
- Do not sleep through the evening puja time.
- Break the fast only after the arghya to the stars, or after moonrise if that is your family's custom.
- Eat sattvik food when you break the fast, as most homes cook without onion or garlic for the bhog.
- Share the prasad with your children first, then with the rest of the family.
- Touch the feet of an elder woman of the house and offer her the gift you kept aside.
The syahu mala tradition
In many North Indian families, the mother wears a syahu mala from Ahoi Ashtami until Diwali. It is a thread or chain strung with small silver beads or a silver locket that shows Ahoi Mata. Per family custom, a new bead is added for each child, and some families add one more each year after a child's wedding.
The mala is placed before Ahoi Mata during the puja, sprinkled with water and roli, and then worn. After Diwali it is put away safely and brought out again the next year. It is a quiet, personal piece, traditionally believed to keep the mother's prayer for her children close to her heart through the festival week.
What to wear on Ahoi Ashtami 2026
There is no fixed dress code, but most mothers dress for the evening puja as they would for any festival vrat. These are the common choices:
- Colours: red, maroon, orange, yellow and pink are the usual festive picks. Many families avoid all-black outfits on vrat days.
- Outfit: a saree, salwar suit or lehenga you are comfortable sitting in on the floor for the katha and puja.
- Jewellery: sindoor, bangles and the syahu mala if your family follows it. Keep the rest simple, as you will be fasting through the day.
- Wrist: a natural stone or rudraksha bracelet works well with festive clothing and stays comfortable through a long fast.
