A nakshatra gemstone is the stone assigned to the planet that rules your birth star, not your sun sign or your moon sign. India has 27 nakshatras but only nine planetary lords in the Vimshottari scheme, so all 27 birth stars collapse to nine stones. That is the whole system, and it is why this list has nine entries and not twenty seven.
This guide is for anyone who knows their nakshatra and wants to know what to wear in 2026. We ranked the nine by how usable each prescription is today: whether the classical stone is buyable at a sane price, whether an honest stand-in exists, and whether a rudraksha route exists. Prices below are live Soultheory prices.
Nakshatra Gemstones vs Rashi Stones - Not the Same List
A nakshatra gemstone comes from your birth star. A rashi stone comes from your moon sign. They are two different divisions of the same zodiac, and they usually give different answers.
- The zodiac is divided twice: into 12 rashis of 30 degrees each, and into 27 nakshatras of 13 degrees 20 minutes each.
- One rashi contains 2.25 nakshatras, so a single rashi can carry two or three different planetary lords.
- Rashi prescription follows the sign lord. Nakshatra prescription follows the Vimshottari dasha lord of the star.
- The clash in practice: Mesha rashi is ruled by Mars, but its three nakshatras answer to Ketu, Venus and the Sun. A Mesha native born in Bharani gets a Venus stone, not a Mars stone.

The 9 Nakshatra Gemstones Ranked for 2026
Ranked by how cleanly each classical prescription translates into something you can buy and wear this year.
1. Moon - Pearl, Stand-in Moonstone
Rules Rohini, Hasta and Shravana. This is the cleanest entry on the list because the stand-in is not a compromise. Moonstone is adularescent feldspar and pearl is organic nacre, but both are traditionally associated with the same lunar qualities of calm and steadiness, and Indian sellers have paired them for decades. Our moonstone Buddha bracelet is Rs 1,799, and the rudraksha and moonstone Shiv Shakti set at Rs 1,999 pairs it with 2 mukhi, which is the Moon's bead. Best if you want one purchase covering both routes.
2. Jupiter - Yellow Sapphire, Stand-in Citrine
Rules Punarvasu, Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapada. Yellow sapphire is the most commonly prescribed navaratna stone in India and one of the most expensive, which is why the citrine stand-in matters. Citrine is yellow quartz and is traditionally believed to support the learning and prosperity themes Guru governs. It ranks second only because the visual gap is real: good pukhraj is glassy and citrine is not. Our citrine Buddha bracelet is Rs 1,199. Heat-treated amethyst is sold as citrine constantly - tests in how to identify real citrine.
3. Mercury - Emerald, Stand-in Green Aventurine
Rules Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati. Budha governs speech, commerce and analysis, and panna is the classical stone. Green aventurine is the standard accessible green in Indian crystal retail and is traditionally associated with steady luck. It ranks third because the substitution is colour-based rather than mineralogical. Our green aventurine bracelet is Rs 1,499. Green glass with copper flecks is the usual fake - checks in how to identify real green aventurine.
4. Venus - Diamond, Stand-in Clear Quartz
Rules Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha. Shukra's ratna is diamond, which almost nobody buys as a remedial stone, so Indian families have used sphatik for generations instead. That long usage is why clear quartz ranks this high. Sphatik is the one stand-in here with independent standing in Indian ritual rather than borrowed standing. Our clear quartz sphatik Buddha bracelet is Rs 1,199. Best if you want a stone that also works on a puja altar - see crystals for the puja room.
5. Mars - Red Coral, Stand-in Red Carnelian
Rules Mrigashira, Chitra and Dhanishta. Moonga is organic coral and carnelian is banded chalcedony, so this is a pure colour match. It still ranks mid-table because Mangal remedies are among the most prescribed in India and carnelian is the only warm red we stock that is not dyed. Our red carnelian Buddha bracelet is Rs 1,799. Dyed agate is the standard imitation - see how to identify real carnelian.
6. Saturn - Blue Sapphire, Stand-in Lapis Lazuli
Rules Pushya, Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada. Neelam has the strongest reputation of any navaratna stone and the most cautions attached to it, which is why a low-stakes stand-in is useful. Lapis lazuli is the traditional blue of Indian and Persian craft and is traditionally believed to support discipline and clear judgement. Amethyst is the other common Shani stand-in. Our lapis lazuli bracelet is Rs 1,199 and the amethyst bracelet is Rs 1,499. Dyed howlite is sold as lapis constantly, so use how to identify real lapis lazuli.
7. Ketu - Cat's Eye, Stand-in Tiger Eye
Rules Ashwini, Magha and Mula. This is the only entry where the stand-in shares real optics with the ratna. Chrysoberyl cat's eye and tiger eye both show chatoyancy, the moving band of light caused by parallel fibrous inclusions. That is a shared property, not a colour guess. It ranks seventh because Ketu remedies are the ones most often taken without guidance. Our tiger eye bracelet is Rs 1,199. Glass with a printed sheen is the fake to watch for, covered in how to identify real tiger eye.
8. Rahu - Hessonite, Stand-in Black Onyx
Rules Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha. Gomed is a honey-brown grossular garnet and black onyx is banded chalcedony, so the stand-in matches nothing except the intent. We rank it eighth for that reason. Onyx is used for Rahu because it is the standard grounding black, and the 8 mukhi bead is the better route for this planet. Our black onyx Buddha bracelet is Rs 999. According to traditional belief onyx is traditionally associated with steadiness under pressure, the quality Rahu periods are said to test.
9. Sun - Ruby, No Honest Stand-in
Rules Krittika, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha. This ranks last because we could not find a substitute worth recommending. Garnet and red jasper both get sold as ruby stand-ins, and neither shares hardness, refractive index or origin with corundum. We do not stock garnet and we will not point you at red agate and call it a Surya stone. For a Sun-ruled birth star the honest route in our catalogue is the 1 mukhi Nepali rudraksha at Rs 5,999, which is the Sun's bead in the classical mukhi scheme and has real scriptural standing rather than borrowed colour.
Which Rudraksha Mukhi Matches Your Nakshatra Lord
Every planet in the Vimshottari dasha scheme has a rudraksha face assigned to it, a second route that does not depend on gemstone substitution at all. Rudraksha beads are the seeds of Elaeocarpus ganitrus and the mukhi count is the number of natural clefts on the bead.
| Planet | Mukhi | Soultheory product | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | 1 mukhi | Ek mukhi bead | Rs 5,999 |
| Moon | 2 mukhi | Do mukhi copper bracelet | Rs 1,499 |
| Mars | 3 mukhi | Teen mukhi bead | Rs 699 |
| Mercury | 4 mukhi | Chaar mukhi bead | Rs 699 |
| Jupiter | 5 mukhi | Paanch mukhi bead | Rs 499 |
| Venus | 6 mukhi | Chhah mukhi copper bracelet | Rs 1,499 |
| Saturn | 7 mukhi | Saat mukhi copper bracelet | Rs 1,499 |
| Rahu | 8 mukhi | Aath mukhi bead | Rs 3,799 |
| Ketu | 9 mukhi | Nau mukhi bead | Rs 3,999 |
How We Ranked These 9 Nakshatra Gemstones
Ranking criteria
- Honesty of the substitution. A shared optical or structural property beats shared colour. Chatoyancy for Ketu ranked above colour matching for Rahu.
- Standing in Indian practice. Sphatik for Venus ranks high because Indian households already used it, not because a modern list assigned it.
- Buyability in 2026. A prescription you cannot act on is not a recommendation. Every stone ranked here is in stock and priced under Rs 2,000 except the Sun entry.
- Whether a rudraksha route exists. All nine planets have one, which is why the Sun entry could rank last without being useless.
What we deliberately did not do
We did not rank by which planet is strongest, because that needs an individual chart and this is a general guide. We also did not invent a stand-in where none was defensible, which is how the Sun ended up at rank 9 with a bead instead of a stone.
Honourable Mentions
- Selenite for Moon-ruled stars. Soft gypsum, not wearable as a bracelet, but a common altar choice. Cut because pearl already has a wearable stand-in.
- Hematite for Saturn. Grounding and iron-grey, sometimes offered as a Shani stone, but the Indian precedent is much thinner than lapis.
- Malachite for Mercury. Closer to emerald than aventurine is, but a copper carbonate that reacts to acid and sweat, which makes it a poor daily-wear bracelet in Indian heat.
What to Check Before You Buy a Nakshatra Gemstone in 2026
Buying a stand-in and buying a ratna are two different transactions.
- Confirm the nakshatra first. A stone bought against the wrong birth star is wasted money regardless of quality. Nakshatra depends on the moon's position at birth, not the date alone. Hindu astrology sets out the framework.
- Do not buy a real navaratna stone online without a lab report. Certified pukhraj and neelam run into lakhs and the certification is the entire protection. Our position on crystal lab reports is in are certified crystal bracelets real.
- For precious metal settings, check hallmarking through the Bureau of Indian Standards, which runs the hallmark scheme in India.
- Ask what the bead or stone actually is. Dyed howlite, heat-treated amethyst and glass are the three substitutions we see most often.
- Get the fit right. A bracelet that slides off gets removed and forgotten. Measure using the crystal bracelet size guide.
- Do not stack all nine. One planetary stone worn consistently beats a wrist of nine. Pairing rules in top 7 stones to pair with rudraksha.
FAQ - Nakshatra Gemstones in 2026
How do I find my nakshatra without a jyotishi?
Any panchang or Vedic astrology calculator gives it from your date, exact time and place of birth. Time matters more here than for rashi, because the moon crosses a nakshatra in roughly a day. If the birth time is uncertain, the nakshatra may be too, and a general stone is the safer choice.
Can I wear a nakshatra gemstone and a rashi stone together?
Yes, and many people do, but they answer different questions and can point to different planets. If the two disagree, most traditional practitioners give the nakshatra lord priority. Wearing both is not a problem in itself.
Is a crystal stand-in as good as the classical ratna?
No, and we will not claim it is. The stand-in keeps a planetary intention in daily wear at a price that does not require a lab report. The classical ratna is a separate, far more expensive purchase that should involve a jyotishi.
Which nakshatra gemstone is best for beginners?
Moonstone for Moon-ruled stars and clear quartz for Venus-ruled stars, because both stand-ins are honest rather than colour-matched. If your star is Sun-ruled, start with the 1 mukhi bead instead of hunting a ruby substitute.
Do rudraksha and gemstones for the same planet cancel each other out?
No. They are two traditions that share the navagraha framework, and wearing the bead and the stone for the same planet is common practice in India. The one thing worth avoiding is stacking beads for planets that classical texts treat as opposed.
