List of Crystals and Their Meanings - A to Z Stone Index

This list of crystals and their meanings is the one page we wish someone had handed us when we started: every stone, wood and seed we work with at Soultheory, from agate to unakite, with what it is traditionally believed to support, how hard it is, and whether it can touch water. Per Vedic tradition, a stone is chosen for a purpose, not for its colour alone, so each entry below gives you the purpose first and the care rule second. Keep it bookmarked - it is built to be the reference you come back to.

Quick comparison table of all stones

The table gives you every stone at a glance, with its hardness on the Mohs scale: a bracelet worn daily beside a steel watch needs 6.5 or more. "Brief rinse" means a few seconds under running water, never soaking. Karungali and rosewood are woods and rudraksha is a seed, so they follow their own care rules.

Stones A to F

From agate to fluorite, these are the stones most people meet first, and most of them are hard enough for daily wear.

Agate

A banded chalcedony traditionally associated with balance and steady nerves. It comes in many forms, from Botswana to blue lace. Our agate guide covers each type.

Amazonite

A sea-green feldspar linked with calm, clear speech. It is softer and slightly porous, so keep it away from perfume. Read our amazonite guide.

Amethyst

A purple quartz long kept near the bed or worn in meditation, and traditionally believed to support peace and restful sleep. Full detail in our amethyst guide. Its name comes from the Greek for "not drunk", explained on Wikipedia.

Aquamarine

A pale blue beryl associated with clarity and calm, and one of the hardest stones in this list.

Black onyx

A black chalcedony worn for grounding and protection, and one of the stones our readers ask about most. See black onyx benefits.

Black tourmaline

A striated black stone traditionally kept as a protective shield, often paired with pyrite in one bracelet.

Carnelian

An orange-red chalcedony associated with confidence and energy before a big day. Read carnelian benefits.

Citrine

A yellow quartz associated with abundance and optimism. Much market citrine is heat-treated amethyst - ask before you buy.

Clear quartz

Colourless quartz, used in crystal healing to "amplify" the intention of stones worn beside it. See clear quartz benefits and myths.

Fluorite

A purple-green stone associated with focus and study. At hardness 4 it scratches easily, so we only use it inside stacks worn with care.

Stones G to L

This band holds two of the most traditional Indian materials, karungali and lapis, plus one stone that is honestly man-made.

Garnet

A deep red stone associated with vitality and commitment, and the traditional January birthstone.

Goldstone

A sparkling glass made with copper, so it is man-made, not mined. We say this plainly in goldstone meaning and myths.

Green aventurine

A green quartz known as a stone of luck and new opportunity, popular with people starting a business.

Hematite

A heavy metallic iron oxide worn for grounding. It rusts, so keep it dry. Read hematite benefits.

Howlite

A soft white stone associated with patience and sleep. Because it takes dye well, it is often dyed blue and sold as turquoise.

Jade

A smooth white or green stone associated with harmony and long life, found in our clarity duo.

Jasper

An opaque chalcedony in many patterns, associated with stamina. Our jasper guide covers six types.

Karungali

Ebony heartwood (Diospyros ebenum), worn in Tamil Nadu as a protective malai and a traditional Shani remedy. See karungali vs rudraksha.

Labradorite

A grey feldspar with a blue-green flash, associated with change and intuition.

Lapis lazuli

A deep blue rock with golden pyrite flecks, prized for thousands of years (Wikipedia) and associated with wisdom and truth. Read lapis lazuli benefits.

Lava stone

Porous volcanic rock, worn for grounding and used to hold a drop of essential oil.

Stones M to R

This band has the softest stone you will wear daily, malachite, and the two most sacred non-minerals, rosewood and rudraksha.

Malachite

A banded green stone associated with transformation. It is soft and must stay dry. See malachite rules and care.

Moonstone

A milky feldspar tied to the Moon and emotional calm. Read moonstone benefits.

Obsidian

A natural volcanic glass worn for protection and honesty. See black obsidian myths.

Pyrite

"Fool's gold", an iron sulphide associated with wealth and willpower. Keep it dry. Read pyrite benefits.

Rhodonite

A pink stone with black veins, associated with forgiveness and matters of the heart.

Rose quartz

A soft pink quartz, the classic stone of love and compassion. See rose quartz meaning.

Rosewood

A light, fragrant wood for simple prayer beads. Read rosewood meaning and care.

Rudraksha

The seed of Elaeocarpus ganitrus, sacred to Shiva, graded by its mukhi (faces). Our types of rudraksha guide covers 1 to 21 mukhi.

Stones S to Z

The last band ends with two stones that people most often damage by washing: selenite and turquoise.

Selenite

A soft gypsum crystal (hardness 2) used as a charging plate for other stones. Water dissolves its surface. See selenite care.

Smoky quartz

A brown quartz associated with letting go and grounding.

Sodalite

A blue stone with white veins, associated with calm, logical thinking.

Tiger eye

A golden-brown stone with a moving band of light, traditionally associated with focus and confidence. See tiger eye benefits.

Turquoise

A sky-blue stone worn for protection on journeys. It is porous, so keep oils and water away. Read turquoise benefits.

Unakite

A pink and green granite associated with emotional balance.

Choosing and buying stones wisely

The A to Z tells you what each stone is; this section helps you pick, check and start.

  • Lava stone
For calm, sleep and the mind:

Navagraha and the uparatna substitutes

Per Vedic tradition, each of the nine grahas has a precious gem, and Jyotish texts name more affordable uparatna (substitute stones) for each.

The Navaratna set of nine gems is expensive, so most families wear an uparatna instead. These are the substitutes most commonly cited by astrologers. Always consult your own jyotishi before wearing a stone for a graha.

Graha Primary gem Commonly cited substitute
Surya (Sun) Ruby Garnet, red jasper
Chandra (Moon) Pearl Moonstone
Mangal (Mars) Red coral Carnelian
Budh (Mercury) Emerald Green aventurine, jade
Guru (Jupiter) Yellow sapphire Citrine
Shukra (Venus) Diamond Clear quartz
Shani (Saturn) Blue sapphire Amethyst, lapis lazuli
Rahu Hessonite Garnet
Ketu Cat's eye Tiger eye
Red coral is an animal product, so Soultheory does not sell it; carnelian is the plant-friendly choice many families use.

Natural, treated or man-made: honest notes

Most stones in this index are natural, but four common practices are worth knowing before you pay.

  1. Heat treatment: much citrine is heated amethyst. It is still quartz, but should be sold as heated.
  2. Dyeing: howlite and magnesite are often dyed to imitate turquoise or lapis.
  3. Man-made: goldstone is glass. It is lovely, and it should be named as such.
  4. Reconstituted: some cheap "malachite" and "turquoise" is powder set in resin.
For lab reports and the questions to ask a seller, read our gemstone certification guide.

How to start with your first stones

Start with one stone for one intention, wear it for 40 days, and only then add a second. That is the simplest rule we know.

A hard, forgiving first stone such as tiger eye, amethyst, rose quartz or black onyx survives daily wear and gives you time to notice how you feel. Our crystals for beginners guide walks through the first purchase, and the complete guide to crystal bracelets in India covers pairings. Many of our customers also choose Pran Pratishta, the Vedic energising ritual we perform on request before dispatch. For cleansing by stone type, see our crystal care manual.

FAQ - list of crystals and their meanings

What is the most powerful crystal? No single stone is "most powerful". In crystal healing, the right stone is the one that matches your intention, which is why this index leads with purpose.

Which crystals should not touch water? Selenite, malachite, pyrite, hematite and turquoise should stay dry. Howlite, lapis lazuli, fluorite and amazonite should not be soaked.

Is karungali a crystal? No. Karungali is ebony wood, worn traditionally as a protective malai and a Shani remedy.

Is rudraksha a stone? No. Rudraksha is a seed. It is cleaned with a soft brush and conditioned with a little oil, never soaked for long.

Which stone is best for a beginner? Tiger eye, amethyst, rose quartz and black onyx are hard, forgiving and easy to understand.

Can I wear more than one stone together? Yes, two or three stones with related intentions sit well together. Avoid mixing stones you bought for opposite purposes.

How do I know if a stone is real? Check weight, temperature, natural inclusions and price. For high-value stones, ask for a lab report.

Which uparatna suits Shani? Amethyst and lapis lazuli are the substitutes most commonly cited for Shani, but confirm with your jyotishi first.
