How to Identify Real Turquoise - 6 Tests Before You Buy

If you are working out how to identify real turquoise, you have picked the hardest stone in the shop to get right. Turquoise is the single most imitated blue stone in the Indian market, and the reason is simple economics: genuine turquoise is porous, scarce and expensive, while a lump of cheap white howlite takes blue dye beautifully. The good news is that a bracelet gives you something a polished cabochon does not - drill holes. Here is the honest test order, cheapest first.

Turquoise is a hydrated copper aluminium phosphate, described in the turquoise mineral record as a stone that runs from sky blue to green depending on its chemistry: copper pushes it blue, iron pushes it green. It sits at Mohs 5 to 6 and carries a specific gravity of roughly 2.6 to 2.9. In India it is sold as firoza, and per Vedic tradition it is treated as an upa-ratna, a secondary stone, traditionally associated with Jupiter and traditionally believed to protect travellers.

Stabilised turquoise is not a fake

Start here, because this is where most of the panic comes from. The overwhelming majority of turquoise on the world market, well above nine pieces in ten, has been stabilised - real turquoise that has been impregnated with a clear polymer to harden it and stop it soaking up skin oil and going patchy.

Stabilised turquoise is still turquoise. The mineral is genuine. Stabilising exists because natural chalk-grade turquoise is too soft and too thirsty to survive being worn on a wrist. Untreated, wearable, gem-grade turquoise is a small fraction of what is mined, and it is priced accordingly.

So the useful question is not "is this stabilised". It is "is this turquoise at all". Everything below tests that.

The five things sold as turquoise in India

  1. Natural turquoise, stabilised. Genuine mineral, polymer-hardened. The normal honest commercial grade.
  2. Dyed howlite. The big one. Howlite is a white borate mineral at Mohs 3.5 with grey-black veining that looks convincingly like turquoise matrix once dyed. Sold as turquenite or white buffalo turquoise.
  3. Dyed magnesite. Same trick, slightly harder stone, often a flatter and more uniform blue.
  4. Reconstituted or block turquoise. Real turquoise dust bound in resin and dye, pressed into blocks and cut. Technically contains turquoise. Behaves like plastic.
  5. Trade-name stones that are not turquoise at all. African turquoise is a spotted jasper. Red turquoise is usually dyed magnesite or jasper. These are real stones with their own character, and a straight seller labels them by their trade name rather than passing them off as firoza.

6 tests to identify real turquoise at home

Test 1 - the acetone swab (do this one first)

Soak a cotton bud in acetone or plain nail polish remover and rub a bead firmly for ten seconds. Dye comes off on the cotton. A blue or green stain on white cotton means dyed howlite, dyed magnesite or a dyed reconstituted block. Natural turquoise leaves the bud clean.

One honest caveat: a small number of stabilised pieces are also colour-enhanced, so a very faint tint is not an automatic conviction. A bold, obvious blue smear is.

Test 2 - look into the drill hole

This is the test a bracelet hands you for free, and it is the most useful one on this list. Hold a bead to a bright light and look straight into the drill channel with a phone camera zoomed in.

Real turquoise is the same colour all the way through. Dyed stone shows a white or pale grey core where the dye never penetrated, or a dark ring of concentrated dye pooled at the hole where the drill bit opened the surface. Reconstituted block shows a suspiciously even colour with no internal variation at all, because it was mixed in a bucket.

Test 3 - the steel pin hardness check

Real turquoise is Mohs 5 to 6. A steel needle or pin sits around 5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, so it will struggle to bite into genuine turquoise and will leave at most a faint mark. Dyed howlite is Mohs 3.5 and a steel pin scratches it easily, throwing up a white powder line that shows the undyed stone underneath.

Do this on the back of a bead or inside the drill hole, never on the face. And ignore the fingernail version of this test - a fingernail is 2.5 and scratches neither.

Test 4 - read the matrix, do not admire it

Matrix is the host rock left in the stone: the brown, tan or black veining. On real turquoise it follows fracture lines, it is irregular, it varies in width along its length, and it usually sits very slightly recessed because the host rock is softer than the turquoise around it.

Dyed howlite gives the game away by being too good. Its veins are naturally grey-white and turn a hard uniform black once dyed, and they tend to run in an even spiderweb across every single bead. When ten beads on one bracelet carry near-identical perfect webbing, you are looking at one dyed slab cut ten times, not ten pieces of matrix rock.

Test 5 - weight, temperature and the hot pin

Turquoise has a specific gravity near 2.7, so a bracelet has a definite heft and stays cool against the skin for a few seconds when you first put it on. Plastic and resin imitations run around 1.1 to 1.4 and feel immediately warm and hollow.

For an outright plastic suspect, warm a pin and touch it to the inside of a drill hole. Plastic gives a sharp acrid chemical smell and a tiny melt pit. Stone does neither. This one leaves a mark, so keep it for a piece you have already decided is wrong.

Test 6 - the price sanity check

Price is not a test on its own, but it closes the case. Genuine stabilised turquoise has a floor below which the arithmetic cannot work, because the rough itself costs more than the finished fake. If an 8mm turquoise bracelet is being sold for Rs 250, no test is needed. Nothing in that supply chain was turquoise.

Run tests 1 and 2 together and you will settle nine bracelets out of ten in under two minutes. Everything else on this list exists for the awkward tenth.

What turquoise should cost in India in 2026

  • Under Rs 500 for a bead bracelet. Dyed howlite or magnesite. Treat the turquoise label as decorative.

Caring for real turquoise once you own it

Turquoise is porous even after stabilising, and it is the one stone in a typical collection that genuinely changes with wear.

  • Keep it away from perfume, deodorant, sanitiser and hair oil. These are what turn turquoise green over years.
  • Take it off before a bath. Do not soak it or wash it under a tap.
  • Store it apart from harder beads. Anything above Mohs 6, including quartz-family stones, will scratch it in a drawer.
  • Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth only.

Is dyed howlite the same as turquoise?

Why is my turquoise turning green?
