1. Natural plain obsidian

2. Real varieties with trade names
Snowflake, mahogany and sheen obsidian are all genuine natural material, not marketing inventions. Snowflake obsidian carries pale grey-white spherulites of cristobalite that grew as the glass slowly devitrified. Mahogany obsidian gets its red-brown banding from iron oxide inclusions. Gold sheen and rainbow obsidian owe their shimmer to aligned microscopic inclusions that scatter light. A seller offering these is not necessarily overselling.
3. Manufactured slag glass with an obsidian name
This is where the real substitution happens. Bright translucent "cherry obsidian", "blue obsidian", "green obsidian" and "purple obsidian" are, with very few exceptions, manufactured or slag glass. 6 Tests to Identify Real Obsidian
Run these in order at the counter. Each one narrows the field, and none of them on its own is conclusive.
Test 1 - Hold it against a strong light
Even solid black obsidian is translucent at thin edges. Put a torch behind the bead or the tip of a pyramid and look for a deep brown, olive-green or smoky glow bleeding through the edge. Dyed black onyx stays flatly opaque. This is the single most useful counter test.
Test 2 - Look at how a chip breaks
Obsidian breaks with a conchoidal fracture - a smooth, curved, shell-like surface with sharp edges, which is exactly why it was worked into blades for thousands of years. Check any chip or the base of a pyramid. Grainy or granular breakage points away from obsidian. Be honest about the limit here: manufactured glass fractures conchoidally too, so this test rules out stone imitations, not glass ones.
Test 3 - Read the drill hole
On any strung bracelet the drill hole is the most informative square millimetre on the piece. Dyed beads show a pale grey or white core with a darker ring at the rim where dye soaked in. Genuine obsidian is the same colour all the way through. Look for a slightly chipped, glassy hole rather than a clean moulded one.
Test 4 - Check for bubbles under a loupe
A 10x loupe will show gas bubbles in many manufactured glass beads, often perfectly spherical and evenly distributed. Natural obsidian can also contain bubbles, so bubbles alone do not condemn a piece. What is more telling is what surrounds them: natural material often shows flow banding, needle-like microlites or wispy streaks frozen mid-movement, which moulded glass does not.
Test 5 - Weigh it in your hand
Obsidian has a specific gravity of roughly 2.35 to 2.6, close to ordinary glass and noticeably lighter than the same volume of hematite or agate. It also warms to skin temperature reasonably quickly. A bead that feels unusually heavy and stays stubbornly cold is more likely a denser chalcedony than obsidian.
Test 6 - Test hardness the right way
Obsidian sits at about 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. This is the point where most buyers go wrong. The popular "if it scratches glass it is real" advice comes from the quartz family, which sits at 7. Obsidian is roughly the same hardness as window glass, so it will not reliably scratch glass, and a steel blade will mark it.
