How to Identify Real Lava Rock - 6 Tests Before You Buy

Natural undyed basalt

Ceramic or resin imitation

Moulded from scratch with a texture mould. This is the only category that is straightforwardly fake, and it is also the easiest to catch, because a mould repeats itself and volcanoes do not.

How to identify real lava rock in 6 tests

Do these in order. The first two catch the majority of imitations without any equipment.

Test 1 - The water drop test

Place one drop of water on a flat area of the bead, away from the drill hole. On real lava the drop sinks in within roughly ten to thirty seconds and leaves a darker patch that fades as it dries. On ceramic, glazed pottery or resin it beads up and stays put. This test is also the reason people buy lava beads in the first place, since the same porosity is what lets the bead hold a drop of essential oil.

Test 2 - The pore pattern test

Look at four or five beads side by side, ideally with a phone camera zoomed in or a jeweller's loupe. Real vesicles are irregular in size, depth and spacing, and no two beads match. Moulded imitations repeat: the same three or four pores in the same relative positions, bead after bead. Also check pore depth. Real holes are tunnels that go somewhere; moulded ones are shallow dimples with rounded edges.

Test 3 - The drill hole test

Look inside the hole where the elastic passes through. On a dyed bead you will usually see a lighter grey or brown core against the black surface, which tells you the bead is real lava that has been coloured. On a pressed composite you may see a glossy binder sheen or a uniform matrix with no visible pore structure at all. On a moulded fake the interior is typically the same solid material throughout with a clean, machined-looking wall.

Test 4 - The weight and warmth test

Hold a few beads in your palm. Basalt has a density of roughly 2.7 to 3.0 grams per cubic centimetre, but vesicular lava is lighter than solid rock because of the trapped air, so real lava feels light but still stone-like and stays cool for a couple of seconds before warming. Plastic and resin feel noticeably lighter and warm up almost instantly. Ceramic can mimic the weight but usually feels denser and more uniform than lava should.

Test 5 - The acetone or nail polish remover swab

Rub a hidden bead with an acetone-dampened cotton bud for ten seconds. If black or coloured pigment transfers to the cotton, the bead is dyed. Remember what this does and does not prove: it proves dye, not fraud. Nearly all jet-black lava on the market will show some transfer. Heavy, instant transfer that keeps coming with repeated swabs suggests a surface coating rather than a proper dye penetration, and coated beads will look patchy within a few months of wear.

Test 6 - The scratch test

Basalt sits at roughly 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, so a steel pin will scratch it only with real effort and a fingernail will not mark it at all. If you can dent or scratch a bead with your thumbnail, it is plastic or resin. Dyed lava rock is not fake lava rock

Frequently asked questions

Is all black lava rock dyed?

Not all, but most of it. Natural basalt is usually grey to brownish black rather than jet black, so a uniformly deep black strand has almost certainly been colour-enhanced. This is normal trade practice and does not make the stone fake.

Does real lava rock float in water?
