The Short Answer on Karungali Identification
Real karungali is ebony heartwood. It is unusually heavy for its size, it is cold to the touch and stays cold, the black goes all the way through the bead rather than sitting on the surface, and it does not surrender any colour to a damp white cloth. No single test settles it. You stack three or four of them, and fakes fail at least one badly.
The tests that actually separate genuine ebony from a dyed substitute are the damp cloth test, the drill hole test and the thermal test. The water test that dominates every karungali video on the internet is the weakest of the seven, and we explain below exactly why.
What Karungali Actually Is
Karungali is the Tamil name used in the mala trade for ebony heartwood. Ebony is not one tree. It is a group of dense dark hardwoods from the genus Diospyros, described in detail on Wikipedia's ebony entry, and the species matters for every test below.
The species most often meant by karungali is Diospyros ebenum, Ceylon ebony. Its wood density runs as high as 1,200 kg per cubic metre, which is denser than water, and it is roughly twice as hard as oak. A close Indian relative, Diospyros melanoxylon, is the Coromandel ebony better known across north India as tendu or kendu, the tree whose leaves wrap beedis.
One honest complication: the same Tamil word is applied in some herbal contexts to an entirely different plant. The name alone does not fix the species. What fixes it is the wood in your hand.
An ebony tree is not black throughout. The pale outer sapwood is ordinary looking wood. Only the dense inner heartwood carries the deep black that karungali is prized for, and a mature tree yields a surprisingly small core of it. The 7 Tests You Can Run at Home
Run these in order. The first three cost nothing and catch most fakes.
Test 1: The Damp White Cloth
Wet a white cotton cloth, press it firmly against a bead and twist. Genuine ebony is black because of its own cell structure, so it gives up nothing. A dyed bead leaves a grey or brown smudge on the cloth, sometimes faint on the first pass and obvious on the third. This is the single most useful test in this guide and it takes ten seconds.
Test 2: The Drill Hole
Every mala bead is drilled. Look into the hole with a phone torch. On real karungali the inside of the channel is the same black as the outside, because the colour is the wood. On an ebonised bead the drill has cut through a thin dark skin into pale wood underneath, and the contrast is unmistakable. A bead strung tightly can be nudged along the cord to expose the hole.
Test 3: The Thermal Test
Polished ebony is noticeably cold to the touch and conducts heat away from your skin, so it stays cool for several seconds before it warms. Resin and plastic beads reach your skin temperature almost immediately. Hold three beads in a closed fist for five seconds and open it. If they already feel like part of your hand, they are probably not wood at all.
Test 4: Weight in the Hand
Ebony is heavy in a way that surprises people the first time. Compare your mala against a rudraksha mala or a chandan mala of similar bead size. Karungali should feel clearly heavier than both. A light, airy black mala is the wrong material, whatever the label says.
Test 5: Grain and Pore Lines
Under good light and a phone camera zoom, genuine ebony shows a fine, tight, short grain with faint pore lines running along the bead. It is subtle, never dramatic. Dyed rosewood shows the opposite problem: a bold open grain that the dye darkens unevenly, leaving stripes. A bead with no visible structure at all, perfectly uniform like a bowling ball, is moulded rather than turned.
Test 6: Smell
Ebony is close to odourless. Rub a bead briskly against your palm for ten seconds and smell it. Sandalwood smells sweet, rosewood smells resinous and slightly sour, and freshly moulded resin smells faintly chemical. Karungali should smell of almost nothing.
Test 7: Sound
Roll the beads between both palms, or let the mala drop into a cupped hand. Dense hardwood gives a dry, low, muted clack. Plastic and resin give a higher, brighter, more plasticky rattle. It is a soft signal rather than proof, which is why it sits last.
Why the Water Test Proves Less Than You Think
The most repeated karungali test online is to drop a bead in water and declare it fake if it floats. Ceylon ebony genuinely does sink, so the test is not nonsense. It is just far weaker than its reputation.
Three problems. First, only a few Diospyros species are dense enough to sink at all, so a floating bead may be a lighter but still genuine ebony rather than a fake. Second, plenty of fakes sink perfectly well, because dense dyed hardwoods and resin beads with mineral filler are also heavier than water. Third, a bead on a cord, or one finished with a metal cap, is no longer being weighed on its own merits.

What Fake Karungali Is Usually Made Of
Fakes are not random. Three substitutions account for nearly all of them.
Ebonised light wood. The oldest trick is to take a cheap pale hardwood and ebonise it, traditionally with a solution of iron acetate and today more often with commercial wood dye. The result is convincing on the surface and fails Tests 1 and 2 immediately.
Dyed rosewood and other dense hardwoods. Rosewood is naturally dark, heavy and readily available, which makes it the most common stand in. It sinks, it feels substantial and it passes a casual inspection. It is also a poor bargain in a second sense: every one of the roughly 300 rosewood species now sits under international trade restriction, so a bead sold under a false name carries a real compliance question with it.
Resin and filled plastic. At the cheapest end the bead is not wood. Moulded resin, sometimes loaded with stone powder to add weight, produces a flawlessly uniform black bead with no grain. It fails the thermal test and the sound test instantly, and the drill hole is smooth and glassy rather than fibrous.

What Caps and Certificates Do Not Tell You
A large share of karungali malas, including several in the Soultheory range, are finished with decorative caps at the beads. It is worth being precise about what that metal is. On a mala at this price point the cap is plated base metal, not sterling silver and not a bullion holding. Plating is measured in microns, and it thins first where the cap rubs the cord and at the outer rim.

The point for identification is narrower: a beautiful cap is a statement about the finishing, not about the wood underneath it. Fakes are capped too. If anything, an elaborate cap gives you fewer bare bead surfaces to test, so run your cloth and drill hole checks on an uncapped bead. A certified tag is not by itself proof either. A certificate is only worth the laboratory behind it, and wood species identification is a genuinely specialist job that most gem laboratories do not perform at all. Before you weigh a certificate, check what it actually names:
- The botanical species, not just the trade name karungali
- The issuing laboratory and whether it is independently accredited
- A description that matches the item you hold, including bead count and size
- A date and a reference number you can quote back
- Any statement about legal sourcing of the timber
Sourcing deserves one honest paragraph. High demand has pushed Ceylon ebony into conservation trouble, Sri Lanka bans its export outright, and species are frequently mislabelled to get around restrictions, as documented in the CITES framework covering many ebonies.
